La Graciosa E‑Bike Excursion: Island Paradise on Two Wheels

Just north of Lanzarote lies a tiny island where time seems to stand still. La Graciosa is part of the Chinijo Archipelago and is home to fewer than a thousand residents. There are no paved roads, no traffic lights and no big hotels – only sandy tracks, colourful houses and some of the most unspoiled beaches in the Canary Islands. An e‑bike is the perfect way to explore this quiet paradise without disturbing its tranquillity.

Getting there

Your adventure begins in the fishing village of Órzola, at Lanzarote’s northern tip. From here ferries run several times a day across the narrow strait to La Graciosa. The crossing takes about 25 minutes and offers great views of the sheer cliffs of the Risco de Famara. It’s best to book your ferry tickets in advance during high season, and remember to arrive at the quay at least 15 minutes before departure. E‑bikes can be rented on Lanzarote and taken aboard, or you can hire them directly in La Graciosa’s port.

The ferry docks in Caleta de Sebo, the island’s main settlement. With its sandy streets, low‑rise white houses and small harbour, it feels like a village lost in time. Here you’ll find a few cafés, grocery stores and bike rental shops. After picking up your e‑bike and a quick orientation, it’s time to hit the trails.

Exploring the north: Playa de Las Conchas

A popular first destination is Playa de Las Conchas, a spectacular beach on the northwest coast. The ride there takes around 45 minutes on a packed‑sand track that winds between volcanic hills and fields of scrub. Along the way you’ll pass Montaña Bermeja, a rust‑red volcanic cone, and have constant views of the neighbouring islands Montaña Clara and Alegranza on the horizon. The electric motor on your bike makes the occasional sandy climb much easier, so you can focus on the scenery.

Las Conchas itself is breathtaking: a broad curve of golden sand backed by dunes and facing the deep blue Atlantic. The currents here can be strong, so swimming is not always advised, but it’s a fantastic place for a picnic and a paddle. Take your time to walk along the shore and soak up the wild beauty.

Heading south: Playa Francesa and Montaña Amarilla

From Las Conchas you can either return to Caleta de Sebo for lunch or continue southwards on a circular route. A favourite stop is Playa Francesa, a sheltered bay with turquoise waters that are ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The beach is set below the slopes of Montaña Amarilla, a volcanic cone with striking yellow and ochre layers. If you have the energy, park your bike and hike up the short trail to the summit for panoramic views of the island and the mainland cliffs.

Playa Francesa is also a great spot to watch boats at anchor; many yachts stop here overnight for its calm waters. There are no services on the beach, so bring your own food and plenty of water. Please remember to take all your rubbish back with you – La Graciosa’s fragile ecosystem depends on visitors leaving no trace.

Practical tips

  • Ferry logistics: Ferries depart Órzola roughly every hour in high season (less frequently in winter). Check schedules and book return tickets in advance if possible.
  • Bike rental: If renting in Caleta de Sebo, bring cash; some shops do not accept cards. Ask for a repair kit and pump, as there are no bike shops outside the village.
  • What to bring: Sun cream, hat, swimwear, towels and enough food and drink for the day. There are only a handful of restaurants and shops in Caleta de Sebo and none elsewhere on the island.
  • Respect nature: Stay on marked tracks to avoid damaging vegetation. Do not remove shells or rocks, and avoid disturbing wildlife. Camping on beaches is not permitted without a permit.

Why you’ll love La Graciosa

Riding an e‑bike on La Graciosa feels like stepping into another era. The absence of cars means you hear only the crunch of tyres on sand and the sound of the sea. The island’s simple, low‑impact lifestyle is a reminder that there are still places where nature reigns. Whether you’re cycling along the shoreline, cooling off in crystalline waters or gazing across to the dramatic cliffs of Lanzarote, you’ll be struck by the serenity of this hidden gem. And as you take the evening ferry back to Órzola, salty and sun‑kissed, you’ll already be planning your next visit.
