Mirador del Río E‑Bike Ride: Panoramic Views of Lanzarote’s North

Some rides are all about the destination. Others are about the journey. The e‑bike route from the lush valley of Haría up to Mirador del Río manages to be both. It combines winding mountain roads, charming villages and, at the end, one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the Canary Islands. Thanks to the electric assistance, the demanding climbs become enjoyable rather than punishing, allowing you to savour every turn.

Climbing through the Valley of a Thousand Palms

The town of Haría lies in a green oasis surrounded by rolling hills and hundreds of palm trees. Leaving the plaza on your e‑bike, you’ll head north on a gently ascending road lined with terraced gardens and traditional white houses. The route soon narrows into a series of switchbacks that snake up the side of the Risco de Famara escarpment. As you gain height, the view opens up behind you: the valley spreads out like a patchwork of fields, with volcanic cones dotting the horizon.

Take your time on this climb and use the e‑bike’s various assist modes to keep a comfortable cadence. There are several miradores (lookouts) along the way where you can pull over, catch your breath and take photos. In spring the verges are filled with wildflowers; in summer you might spot hawks riding thermals along the cliff face.

Guinate and its gardens

Roughly halfway up to Mirador del Río you’ll pass through Guinate, a tiny hamlet known for its botanical garden and bird park. It’s worth stopping here to stroll among exotic plants or to enjoy a coffee on a terrace with views towards the Atlantic. On a clear day you can already see the outlines of the Chinijo Archipelago to the north. The tranquil atmosphere of Guinate is a nice contrast to the exposed road ahead.

The final ascent to Mirador del Río

The last stretch of the climb runs along the spine of the Risco. The road is narrower and there are sheer drops on one side, but sturdy guardrails and the e‑bike’s stable handling make it feel safe. Around the final bend you’ll spot a low, stone‑clad building that seems to merge with the cliff. This is Mirador del Río, designed by Lanzarote’s visionary artist and architect César Manrique. Built into the rock so as not to mar the landscape, the mirador features panoramic windows and a terrace that overlook the strait separating Lanzarote from La Graciosa and the other islets of the Chinijo Archipelago.

Parking your bike, you can step inside the mirador (there’s a small entrance fee) to enjoy a coffee and snack while gazing out over turquoise waters, golden beaches and the dramatic cliffs of La Graciosa. Outside, the wind can be strong, so bring a light jacket even on warm days. This is a perfect spot for photos: the perspective from 475 metres above sea level makes the boats and houses below look like toys.

Descent and optional loops

After soaking in the views, you have several options. You can simply retrace your route back down to Haría, enjoying the sweeping downhill curves with the wind in your hair. Alternatively, for a longer ride, continue along the cliff-top road towards Ye and then descend to the coastal village of Arrieta, making a loop back to Haría through Tabayesco. This option allows you to visit the seaside and perhaps reward yourself with fresh seafood before tackling a gentler climb inland.

Tips for the ride

  • Distance and elevation: The direct route from Haría to Mirador del Río and back is about 20 kilometres with around 500 metres of climbing. The extended loop via Ye and Arrieta adds another 15 kilometres.
  • Skill level: Moderate. The road is paved but has significant elevation gain and some tight corners. The e‑bike’s motor makes the climb manageable for most people with a basic fitness level.
  • When to go: Mornings are quieter and less windy. In summer, start early to avoid midday heat.
  • What to bring: Water, sunscreen, a light windbreaker and some cash for café stops or the mirador entrance fee.

Why ride to Mirador del Río

This ride showcases the diversity of Lanzarote’s north: lush valleys, steep cliffs, tiny villages and world‑class architecture. It’s also a lesson in how geography shapes human creativity — from the traditional terraced farming around Haría to Manrique’s ability to blend architecture with nature. On an e‑bike, you get to enjoy the climb without dreading it and arrive at Mirador del Río feeling exhilarated rather than exhausted. The vistas awaiting you at the top are more than worth the effort.
