Timanfaya E‑Bike Tour: Explore Lanzarote’s Volcanoes and La Geria

Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime e-bike adventure through Timanfaya National Park, one of Lanzarote’s most iconic landscapes. This tour takes you deep into the heart of the island’s volcanic past, winding across solidified lava fields and craters shaped by eruptions in the eighteenth century. Riding an electric bike makes the journey accessible even to casual cyclists – the gentle assistance helps you tackle the rolling terrain without breaking a sweat.

Our route starts in the charming village of Haría, nestled among the palm-studded valleys of northern Lanzarote. After a brief safety briefing and introduction to the e-bikes, we set off towards the south, following quiet country roads and tracks that soon reveal the stark beauty of the Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains). The air is warm with the scent of volcanic earth, and the scenery shifts between black ash slopes and occasional green oases.

Entering the boundaries of Timanfaya National Park, you’ll feel as if you’ve landed on another planet. Jagged cones rise against the horizon, their rust-red sides illuminated by the sun. We stop at several viewpoints to appreciate the immensity of the lava fields and to learn about the dramatic eruptions that buried villages and reshaped the island. You will have time to explore the visitor centre at Islote de Hilario, where guides demonstrate how hot the ground remains just beneath the surface – hay bursts into flame when dropped into a vent, and water poured into boreholes erupts as steam. These geothermal displays remind you that the earth here is still very much alive.

From Timanfaya we descend into La Geria, Lanzarote’s celebrated wine-growing region. Here the landscape changes again: countless semi-circular stone walls protect individual vines from the relentless wind. The vines grow out of black volcanic soil that retains moisture, producing unique wines with a mineral character. We stop at a family-run bodega to taste a glass (or two) of Malvasía Volcánica and learn how local farmers have adapted their methods to thrive in this harsh environment. If you prefer not to drink, try the delicious grape juice and sample local goat cheese or olives.

Throughout the ride your guide shares stories about the island’s history, ecology and culture. You’ll learn how the volcanoes influenced architecture, agriculture and even cuisine. Riding an e-bike allows you to cover more ground than on a standard bicycle while still enjoying the open-air experience. The tour is designed for intermediate fitness levels; the e-bike’s motor provides assistance on climbs, but you should be comfortable cycling for several hours. We recommend wearing closed shoes, bringing sun protection and carrying a reusable water bottle. The distance covered is roughly 35 kilometres, with plenty of stops to rest, take photos and soak up the atmosphere.

The tour finishes back in Haría, where you can unwind in a local café or explore the artisan market if it’s a Saturday. You’ll return with not just amazing photos but a deeper appreciation for Lanzarote’s volcanic soul and the resilience of the people who call this island home. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a curious traveller, the Timanfaya E-Bike Tour offers a perfect blend of adventure, education and relaxation.
